Food storage

I have been busy, busy, busy!!!

Last night brock and I had a midweek tiny FHE. Here's what happened: the other day I was reading my friends blog post about food storage (I'm going to steal some of your blog Fred.) In it she shared this story:

"A close friend told us about a conversation they had with someone about food storage. The guy didn't understand why anyone would waste their time storing food and water when the store is just down the street... wow. Do you remember the snow storm that happened 4 months ago that shut down 1/2 the city and prevented trucks from getting meat, dairy, and produce to the stores? Obviously not. Selective memory I think. Or how about a pandemic and/or epidemic where you can't leave your home safely? Or tornado, hurricane, or earthquake that takes out many buildings, including your supermarket? Some people are very naive."

This really got me thinking about food storage, or Poulsen lack there of. As many of you know, Brock and I have a hefty amount of dept due to some medical problems last fall tied together with no insurance, as well as a little to much fun with those little square platic thingies. (okay, not really fun, more like car problems that cost to much for our sad bank account) So I've started a 6 month get out of debt plan. But after readying Alyssa's blog, i think it's going to be more like 7 months because we are going to start working on food stoage this month. My parents are coming in a few weeks and they have a costco card, so we are going to use it and get a ton of canned and bulk foods. During FHE, we read Alyssa's post last night, looked on the chuch website, which she links in her post, and made a list.

1st list is food we want from costco.

2nd list is food we want from Smiths (stuff we don't needs 8 lbs of such as toothpaste)

3rd is travel size things to put in the 72 hour kit my dad got us for Christmas.

Our goals are, by month end to have enough food for 1 week. By summer end, to have enough food for 1 months, and by year end to have enough food for 3 months. and next year have enough food for 6 months which we are really good about rotating out and replacing so nothing goes bad. Pretty good FHE, right?

Woohoo! We are in the same boat as you, as far as debt goes. We have a similar plan and it's due to similar circumstances (i.e. car, medical, etc.) Yay for helping you!!! Let me know if you figure out any more things because I'm still learning too.

Wow, I am not good at the food storage either. Maybe this will inspire me!

Food Storage and Debt elimination were mine and David's New Year's Resolutions this year.
My advice for food storage is when something you like is on sale, buy a lot of it. If you just go out and try to buy a bunch of cans, you'll wipe out your budget but if you buy it when it's at it's lowest price, you're saving money in the long run AND providing food storage for your family.
Also, watch Macey's ads. They have a LOT of food storage items that go on really cheap (they totally beat Costco's prices when they have their caselot or food storage sales).
Best of luck and congratulations! It really is a load off your mind knowing that if something happened, you wouldn't starve.
